One of the most under-appreciated feature of computers has to be the most used portion of the computer. Keyboards have been placing our input into computers since 1964, but they have come a long way since electric typewriters converted data into computer input. Enter 2013 with technological advances, the SteelSeries Apex keyboard.
In comparison, the Apex is exactly what it says it is. This product tops of the charts when it comes to quality, usability, and features of keyboards. Designed with low profile keys, movement between keystrokes is fluid and extremely responsive as you type. Once you become accustom to this, it produced a higher typing speed for myself. It also increased the response time of on screen actions in computer games. Included with the device are replaceable footpads so you can adjust the angle of the keyboard to your preference. To me, this keyboard feels extremely natural and efficient after a short period of use.
Lighted keyboards have been on the market for a few years now, but nothing has compared in my opinion than the features of SteelSeries. This is one of my favorite features, since often I utilize my computer in low light conditions. With the Apex, it allows for the choice of up to 18.1 million color variations spreading across five color zones of the keyboard. This is changed using their downloadable tool known as the SteelSeries engine. Inside, the application allows you to modify schemes from coloring the entire keyboard one color, spreading to colorizing each of the five zones uniquely. In addition, the side and corners of the keyboard provide illumination to add an extra element of ambient feel.
As a PC gamer, I am extremely hard on what I look for in keyboards. Response time and the ability to utilize multiple keys simultaneously are high on my priority list. Fortunately, this keyboard is extremely responsive providing noticeably quicker response times to traditional manufacturer’s peripherals. Built into this device, is what is known as anti-ghosting, which provides the ability to press multiple keys simultaneously without locking out the keyboard. In standard devices, after the third or fourth key press, it will not send anymore to the PC until another key has been released. Apex allows six keys to be pressed at the same time without failing to send to the computer. While this is only on the most popular 20 keys for gaming, I have not found an instance yet where the keyboard failed to respond as other brands have.
With twenty-two keys for creating macros that is expanded into eighty-eight programmable macros allows for performing complex keyboard based operations easy with one key press. This makes mundane tasks such as Excel tasks or in gaming such as massively multiplayer online games (MMORPG). This as well is modified by the use of the SteelSeries Engine software that is downloaded from their website, SteelSeries.com. You can also modify profiles for games and software so that different macros can be saved per program or user as needed. Personally, 88 macros is enough for what I do even with several games.
Since it is designed as a gaming keyboard, the setup is ideal for both first person shooters, and MMORPGs. Slight bumps are placed on the “W” keys for quick repositioning of hands without the need to look at the keyboard. As well, media keys such as volume, mute, play, and track position keys are located on the keyboard to make manipulating media easy. As well, not only are the directional keys up, down, left, and right but also have keys for up, left and up, right at the same time. In addition, the Windows key can be disabled so accidentally pressing it does not flip you out of your game.
I previously have utilized SteelSeries keyboards in my notebook, and I have to say that from personal experience this manufacturer produces an extremely durable product. This model feels just as solid as my notebook keyboard with all of the extra features of a desktop keyboard. In addition, there are two built in USB ports so you can quickly plug in devices such as USB flash drives and mice without needing to bend over to the computer. Overall, my experience has always been good with SteelSeries, but the Apex truly is the peak of the products I have used throughout my life and career in computers. I think this is the perfect give for computer enthusiasts since it is often a device not thought about improving their computer experience. You can purchase this keyboard at Best Buy locally, or online at SteelSeries themselves.
