After weeks of anticipation and excitement, summer is finally here. If you’ve spent months of dreaming of warmer climes and lighter nights, you’re probably thrilled. Most of us enjoy a bit of sun from time to time. But what happens when the mercury rises, and it’s just too hot? Here are some handy hints to help you keep cool this summer.
Light and shade
When the summer months arrive, most of us look forward to spending more time in the garden. On a pleasant day, there’s nothing better than catching some rays, playing with the kids, or enjoying an al fresco lunch. On a scorching day, it’s a shame to sit indoors, but it may be too hot to bask in the sunshine. This is why it’s a good idea to create some shady patches in your garden. Use parasols to offer shade when you’re dining or enjoying a drink. Shelter under tree canopies or add an awning to the side of the house. When it gets too warm, you can roll in out and then put it back when the temperature becomes more tolerable.
Invest in air conditioning
If you live in an area that enjoys long, hot summers, air conditioning can be a Godsend. You can customize your units to cool different rooms, or use a universal system. Hydration is essential all year round. But it’s particularly important on hot days when you tend to sweat more. Sweating is your body’s way of trying to cool you down. When you sweat, you lose fluid, and this needs replacing. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times, and try and make sure you drink at least 2 liters per day. Dehydration can cause headaches, muscle pain, and tiredness.
