How to Stop Your Dog Chewing Everything Within Reach

When your dog won’t stop chewing everything within its reach, it can be difficult to know where to turn. You can’t just let this carry on, but it’s hard to know where you should begin when aiming to halt the behaviour. That’s especially true when you’re a new dog owner and have no experience of this kind of thing.

If you’re struggling with this, here are some of the steps you should take. By combining a few of these ideas, you should be able to get to the bottom of the problem and prevent it pretty quickly.

Make Your Home Chew-Proof

First of all, you should try to make your home chew-proof. You could make sure that your dog is only left alone in parts of the house where they can’t do much damage to expensive furniture. Or you could even cover things in plastic until they grow out of this problem. It’s always best to make sure that it’s as difficult as possible for them to cause damage when you’re not around to stop them.

Provide Your Dog With Toys to Chew

Some dogs simply like to chew on things, if your dog does, you need to provide them with something else they can chew on. If they have to chew on something, it’s best to offer them a rubber toy and let them gnaw on that rather than your dining table’s legs or the side of the sofa. It’s very easy to find chew toys that are durable and keep dogs satisfied for hours if necessary. A nerf ball thrower for dogs can also be a good toy to purchase because they can chase it and then chew on it. Just give them something to chew on to stop them focusing on your furniture.

Consider Whether It’s a Sign of Separation Anxiety

In some cases, chewing things can be a sign of separation anxiety, and it’s common when you leave your dog alone. If you haven’t had the dog for long and it’s building a bond with you, it can get anxious when you leave it in the house alone. This is a very unpleasant experience for them. And they can sometimes deal with it by chewing the furniture or behaving badly in other ways. To get over this, you should take your dog to a vet and have them assessed. They might be able to offer advice and medication if necessary to stop the problem in its tracks.

Give Your Dog Plenty of Exercise

Your dog can sometimes start to chew things and behave badly because they are not unleashing their energy in other ways. So, if you are not giving them enough exercise, this is something that you should definitely aim to change. The right amount of activity will make sure that they don’t feel like they need to start chewing things to relieve that stress and let out their energy. It’s a very common reason for this kind of behaviour. Dogs needs to let out their build up energy in one or another, so take them to a field and let them run around for a while.

Use Repellants

It’s possible to buy sprays that you can use on your furniture and around the home. When you make the most of these, you can make sure that your dog doesn’t want to chew things anymore. The spray makes the furniture taste bad to them, and they will not want to go near it again. It’s easy to get hold of this stuff, and it should work for you. You just have to make sure that they don’t just start chewing something else that doesn’t taste so bad to them instead. That can happen, so remain vigilant at all times.

Create a Distraction

Finally, you should try to create a distraction whenever your dog looks like it’s about to start this chewing behaviour. This is a pretty simple tactic, but it can often work out well. You should give them something else that is appealing to them which they can then focus their attention on. Even if it means giving them treats for stopping their behaviour and coming over to you instead, this is worth doing. It will reinforce their positive behaviour in not chewing the furniture or the carpet. Give it a try if none of the other ideas are working for you.

It can be really frustrating when your dog is chewing your furniture up and causing lots of damage. But this doesn’t have to carry on. Make use of the tips above.
