Santorini is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Kamari Beach is visited by millions of travellers every year for its unique landscape and its natural beauty. Red Beach and White Beach are just as popular among travellers.
But Santorini is more than its beaches. While spending days on the beach, relaxing or sampling the water activities offered in Santorini, is a fantastic way to enjoy your holiday, there are more things you can do to have a truly magical trip.
The Fira to Oia Hike
Santorini is the perfect place for walking. Many attractions are within walking distance from one another, which means you can have your own mini-adventure and visit several of them while taking long walks in between attractions. Add the island’s beautiful scenery and its friendly locals, and you know you will have a lot of fun walking to various places.
The one hike you absolutely need to try – at least once in a lifetime – is the Fira to Oia hike or vice versa. Depending on where you start your hike, it is either an uphill or a downhill walk that leads to a very rewarding destination. Oia is the famous village where you will find Santorini’s signature white structures. Fira, on the other hand, is the island’s bustling capital city.
You can enjoy a long hike to one destination and then take the cable car back to your starting point. The cable car ride itself is special since it gives you a different view of Oia and Fira. Just make sure you have your camera ready because the view from the cable cars is not the kind of view you want to miss; if you are lucky, you can watch the sunset from the cable car too.
A Culinary Adventure
Another thing Santorini is famous for is its culinary richness. A lot of traditional Greek dishes and some local variations of them can be found in local restaurants. Forget about the fancy dining places and the restaurants in hotels or popular tourist attractions. What you want to do is explore the local restaurants in places like Pygros.
Speaking of Pygros, Cava Alta is a must-visit if you are interested in sampling the local dishes. The place serves flavoursome dishes that you will not forget. It is actually one of my favourite restaurants on the island. It’s beautiful too, so you can snap a few pictures for Instagram here.
Lucky’s (Souvlaki) in Fira is another must-visit place. This is where you go when you want to enjoy a delicious gyro without spending a fortune. It is as good as it gets, although ordering your food can be a challenge when the place is crowded; there are no servers and you have to go to the cashier to order.
The Luxury Experience
The ultimate way to enjoy Santorini, however, is in utter luxury. You’ll be surprised by how affordable a luxury trip to Santorini is, especially when you know how to enjoy the best amenities without spending a fortune on the trip.
You can start by staying in a luxury villa rather than a hotel. There are some gorgeous private villas in Santorini with a pool, direct access to the beach or other popular attractions, and even luxury services. These villas are not only easy to find but also easy to book now that you can make a reservation online. Find more information on this site if you want to start planning your luxurious Santorini trip.
Since you are going on a luxury trip, you want the rest of the itinerary to be as luxurious. The Santorini wine tours are definitely worth a try. You can sample wine from the three top wineries on the island, all while having a fantastic time admiring the island’s natural beauty. There are also guided tours to other destinations, plus you can now go on a sunset cruise to complete the day.
One last thing to keep in mind is the fact that Santorini has strong historic and cultural roots that are worth exploring. Places like Ancient Akrotiri and Ancient Thira are always fascinating to explore. These archaeological sites take you back to the glory days of Greek civilisation and even further, showing you the marvels of prehistoric settlements.
Santorini is home to several museums that provide you with insights from different era too. The most famous one is the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. It is perfectly situated near Santorini’s archaeological sites, which means you can conclude your day of exploration with a trip to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and have a truly enlightening day.
Santorini has a lot to offer. You can go beyond relaxing on the beach now that you have these tips and tricks in mind. The next time you are planning a trip to Santorini, make sure you try new things and go on your own adventure on the island.
